Micro-Learning with Digital Tools

Advancements in technology have changed access to learning materials, and a new form of learning has emerged: Micro-Learning (Shatte & Teague, 2020). Micro-Learning involves delivering educational content in short, focused bursts that students can access anytime, anywhere. This article will explore the fundamentals of Micro-Learning and highlight some instructional tools that can help educators support their students in achieving their educational goals.

What is Micro-Learning?

Micro-learning organizes learning into brief, focused experiences that students can complete and revisit as needed. A micro-learning experience may introduce new information, provide practice, reinforce previous learning, or give students support at the moment they need it.

Although micro-learning is often associated with short videos, it can take many forms. A short reading, practice activity, quiz, demonstration, scenario, discussion prompt, or reference guide could all be used as micro-learning when intentionally designed around a focused learning purpose.

Effective Micro-Learning Is:

  • Focused: Center each experience on one specific concept, skill, question, or learning objective.
  • Brief and manageable: Include only the content and activities students need to accomplish that purpose. There is no single required length; the scope of the learning experience is more important than meeting a specific time limit.
  • Purposeful: Students should understand what they are expected to learn or do and why the experience matters.
  • Accessible: Students should be able to access and engage with the experience using different devices and appropriate assistive technologies.
  • Connected: Individual micro-learning experiences should contribute to the larger course rather than feel like disconnected pieces of content.

When to Use Micro-Learning

Micro-learning does not need to replace your existing lectures, readings, assignments, or other learning experiences. Instead, consider where a smaller, targeted experience could help students prepare, practice, review, or receive additional support.

Prepare Students for Learning

Use a short learning experience before class, a lecture, or a larger activity to introduce essential terminology, background information, or a key concept.

Example: Before discussing a research study in class, students review a brief explanation of correlation and causation.

Break Down Complex Learning

Separate a complex concept, procedure, or skill into smaller components that students can work through progressively.

Example: Instead of one resource explaining an entire statistical procedure, provide separate micro-lessons for selecting the test, conducting the analysis, and interpreting the results.

Reinforce or Review Learning

Give students opportunities to retrieve and revisit important information after instruction.

Example: Students answer three retrieval questions at the end of each module to identify what they remember and what they may need to review.

Provide Just-in-Time Support

Give students a short resource they can access when completing a particular task.

Example: Place a brief citation guide next to an assignment so students can quickly review how to cite the source type they are using.

Address Common Misconceptions

Create targeted explanations, examples, or practice opportunities for concepts students frequently misunderstand.

Example: After noticing a common error on an assignment, provide a short worked example explaining the misconception and ask students to identify the error in a second example.

Support Application and Practice

Give students a manageable opportunity to apply a concept before completing a more complex task.

Example: Students review a brief patient scenario and select the most appropriate response before completing a larger case analysis.

Designing a Micro-Learning Experience

Micro-learning works best when you begin with the learning need, not the digital tool. Before deciding whether to create a video, quiz, interactive activity, or another resource, identify what students need to learn and what they need to do with that learning.

1. Identify the Learning Need

Start by asking:

Where could a small, focused learning experience help my students?

Look for concepts students frequently misunderstand, processes that can be broken into steps, information students need to reference regularly, opportunities for additional practice, or places where a larger lesson could benefit from being divided into smaller components.

2. Define a Focused Objective

Identify what students should know or be able to do after completing the experience.

Keep the objective narrow enough to address in a brief learning experience.

Too broad: Understand chemical bonds.

More focused: Distinguish between ionic and covalent bonds.

3. Decide What Students Need to Do

Think about the action that will best support the objective.

Do students need to:

  • Watch or observe
  • Read or reference
  • Retrieve or recall
  • Practice
  • Apply
  • Make a decision
  • Reflect
  • Discuss or explain

The answer can help you determine what type of micro-learning experience to create.

4. Choose the Mode or Modes

Select the format that best supports what students need to do. You might use video and multimedia, an interactive experience, static content, or a combination.

You do not need to choose one type of micro-learning for your entire course. Different learning objectives may benefit from different modes, and several modes can work together as part of a sequence.

5. Choose a Digital Tool

Once you know what students need to do, select a digital tool that provides the features needed to create the experience.

Rather than asking, “How can I use this tool for micro-learning?” consider asking:

“What do I want students to do, and which available tool can help me make that happen?”

6. Connect the Experience to the Course

Tell students why they are completing the micro-learning experience and what they should do with what they learn.

For example:

  • Before class: “Complete this activity before class. We’ll use these concepts to analyze a case together.”
  • During a module: “Use this practice activity to check your understanding before beginning the assignment.”
  • After instruction: “Review this resource if you had difficulty with this week’s problems.”

Main Takeaway: Breaking Content Apart Isn’t Enough
Simply dividing a long lecture, reading, or activity into smaller pieces does not necessarily make it effective micro-learning. Each experience should have a clear learning purpose. If several micro-lessons work together, students should also understand how the pieces connect.

Ways to Deliver Micro-Learning

Micro-learning can be delivered in many different formats. The following categories can help you consider which approach, or combination of approaches, best supports your learning objective.

Categories and examples of micro-learning approaches that instructors can use individually or combine as part of a multimodal approach.

Content-Based Experiences

Content-based experiences provide focused learning materials in short, manageable segments. They can support a range of learning needs, from introducing or demonstrating concepts to reinforcing or reviewing learning. It can usually be created to be revisited or accessed as needed throughout the learning process.

Micro-Lectures and Videos

Use This When: Students need to see or hear a focused explanation, demonstration, example, or process.

Create a short video around one specific concept, question, process, or skill. A micro-lecture might introduce a concept before class, demonstrate one step of a procedure, walk through an example, address a common misconception, or review an important concept. If a topic requires several concepts or steps, consider creating a series of connected videos rather than one longer recording.

Best Practices
  • State the purpose of the video early so students know what to focus on.
  • Focus on one concept, question, process, or skill.
  • Remove lengthy introductions, announcements, or information unrelated to the video’s objective.
  • Use visuals when they help demonstrate or explain something rather than simply repeating spoken information.
  • Make connections between videos clear when they are part of a sequence.
  • Provide accurate captions and communicate important visual information in an accessible way.
  • Give students an opportunity to do something with what they watched, such as answer a question, identify an example, practice a step, or apply the concept.

Short Pages or Readings

Use This When: Students need a focused explanation, reference, overview, example, set of instructions, or other information they can quickly access and revisit.

Create a short resource around one concept, question, process, or task. This could be a:

  • Concept overview
  • Worked example
  • Checklist
  • Step-by-step guide
  • FAQ
  • Annotated example
  • Summary
  • Quick-reference resource

If students need substantially different information for different purposes, consider separating the content into multiple resources rather than creating one long page.

Best Practices
  • Use a clear, descriptive title.
  • Put the most important information first.
  • Organize information with descriptive headings and lists when appropriate.
  • Keep paragraphs concise and make the page easy to scan.
  • Use meaningful link text.
  • Add visuals when they contribute to understanding rather than simply decorating the page.
  • Follow accessibility practices for headings, images, links, tables, color, and document structure.
  • Link to optional extended resources when students may benefit from additional depth rather than putting everything into the micro-resource.

Interactive Experiences

Interactive experiences invite students to actively engage with learning through brief opportunities to respond, explore, practice, make choices, or check their understanding. These experiences encourage students to do something with course concepts rather than only consume information.

Interactive Games or Activities

Use This When: Students would benefit from actively exploring, practicing, applying, or interacting with course content in a short, focused experience.

Create a brief interactive experience that gives students something meaningful to do with the content. Students might explore an interactive image, reveal information, sort or match concepts, sequence steps in a process, make decisions in a scenario, practice with flashcards, or complete a short game. Choose the type of interaction based on what students need to learn or do rather than adding interactivity simply for engagement.

Best Practices
  • Keep the activity focused on a specific concept, skill, or learning goal.
  • Choose interactions that support what students need to explore, practice, apply, or understand.
  • Keep instructions brief and clear so students can focus on the learning rather than figuring out how the activity works.
  • Use feedback to reinforce learning, explain choices, or address misconceptions when appropriate.
  • Allow students to retry or revisit activities when the purpose is practice or exploration. Keep the number of steps and interactions manageable; a micro-learning activity should remain focused and easy to complete.
  • Avoid adding interactive elements that are decorative or create unnecessary difficulty.
  • Make sure students can access and operate the activity using a keyboard and that information is not communicated through interaction, color, or visuals alone.

Quizzing and Polling 

Use This When: Students need to retrieve previous learning, check their understanding, identify misconceptions, or apply a recently learned concept.

Create a small number of targeted questions around one concept or closely related set of skills.

A micro-quiz or poll might be used:

  • Before learning to activate prior knowledge.
  • During learning to check understanding.
  • After learning for retrieval practice or self-assessment.
  • Before application to help students determine whether they are ready to move forward.
Best Practices
  • Use only as many questions as needed to accomplish the purpose.
  • Ask students to retrieve, interpret, or apply information rather than only recognize familiar wording.
  • Use plausible incorrect responses that reflect common misconceptions when appropriate.
  • Provide immediate, explanatory feedback for formative practice when possible.
  • Allow additional attempts when the purpose is learning rather than evaluation.
  • Use responses to inform instruction when possible.
  • Avoid making frequent micro-quizzes high stakes when their primary purpose is practice and feedback.

Shared Learning Experiences

Shared learning experiences incorporate contributions, ideas, and perspectives from others into micro-learning. They create brief opportunities for students to learn with and from peers, instructors, experts, and other voices that can extend or enrich their learning.

Social Connection Platforms

Use This When: Students benefit from briefly explaining, sharing, comparing, questioning, or building on ideas with others.

Give students a small, focused contribution to make to a shared learning space. They might post an example, explain a concept in their own words, respond to a question, share an observation, identify a connection, or contribute a relevant resource. Social micro-learning can happen repeatedly throughout a course without requiring a full discussion assignment each time.

Best Practices
  • Ask focused questions that can reasonably be answered briefly.
  • Give students a meaningful reason to read or interact with peers’ contributions.
  • Go beyond “post once and reply twice” when possible. Ask students to compare examples, answer a peer’s question, identify a connection, or build on another idea.
  • Set clear expectations for the purpose and approximate scope of contributions.
  • Keep participation manageable.
  • Bring ideas from the activity back into subsequent instruction so students can see how their contributions connect to the course.
  • Provide multiple ways to participate when appropriate.

Collaborative Multimedia

Use This When: Students benefit from sharing ideas, responding to others, or building knowledge together using text, images, audio, video, or other media.

Create a brief collaborative experience where students contribute to a shared multimedia space. Students might add an example to a digital board, annotate or respond to an image, contribute ideas to a whiteboard, record a short audio or video response, or build on a peer’s contribution. Keep the task focused so collaboration adds to the learning without becoming a larger discussion or project.

Best Practices
  • Give students a clear, focused purpose for contributing to the shared space.
  • Keep individual contributions brief and manageable to maintain the micro-learning format.
  • Encourage students to view, respond to, or build on others’ contributions when peer interaction supports the learning goal.
  • Use different media options when they meaningfully support the activity.
  • Provide enough structure to keep contributions organized and easy to navigate, especially with larger classes.
  • Avoid requiring collaboration simply for participation; make sure engaging with others contributes to the learning.
  • Consider how you will bring contributions back into instruction, such as highlighting examples, discussing common themes, or addressing questions.
  • Provide clear expectations for appropriate sharing and make sure the chosen contribution methods are accessible.

Expert Insights or Lectures

Use This When: Students would benefit from hearing a focused disciplinary, professional, or real-world perspective connected to something they are learning.

Ask an instructor, researcher, practitioner, or other expert to address one focused question, concept, example, or application rather than delivering a full guest lecture. An expert might explain how a course concept appears in professional practice, demonstrate a technique, respond to a common question, analyze an example, or share a disciplinary perspective.

Best Practices
  • Give the expert one focused question or topic.
  • Explain what students already know and where the contribution fits in the course.
  • Ask for a concrete example, demonstration, or application when appropriate.
  • Give students a reason for engaging with the expert’s contribution.
  • Pair it with a brief reflection or application prompt when useful.
  • Divide longer contributions into separate segments when they address multiple ideas.
  • Provide captions or transcripts for recorded audio and video.

Choosing Digital Tools for Micro-Learning
